What is the MotoGiro di California?

The MotoGiro di California is a retrospective tribute to the Giro d’Italia Motociclistico (a.k.a. Motogiro), Italy’s premier long distance motorcycle road race of the 1950’s.

The MotoGiro di California celebrates the machines and riders from the golden era of the Motogiro, 1953-57. During this period the Motogiro was organized and promoted by the Italian sports newspaper Stadio. During the Stadio years over 50 Italian motorcycle manufacturers fielded “protagonisti” in the Motogiro.

The MotoGiro di California is a multi-day touring event for 1957 and older Italian motorcycles up to 175cc.

The MotoGiro di California is always held the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before Columbus/Indigenous People’s Day, with arrival Sunday, and riding Monday and Tuesday. In recent years additional riding has been available Wednesday and Thursday. Daily riding mileage is approximately 150 miles.

The MotoGiro di California is staged from a different location each year.

Machine eligibility is explained in detail in the Rule Book, but in short the following machines are eligible to participate in MotoGiro di California:

1) Pre-1958 motorcycles up to 175cc engine displacement.

2) Post-1957 machines with clear “like design” lineage to motorcycles from category #1 above and 175cc max.

3) Other post-1957 Italian motorcycles which the Eligibility Committee deems to be “in the spirit of the era” may be considered for participation on a case-by-case basis and 175cc max.
